After a well deserved week off, Lion (going for a history chasing 5 wins from 5) once again took to the field against a Totterdown United Reserves side struggling for form.
As seems to be the norm these days, Lion enjoyed plenty of early possession. The first 20 minutes however were relatively devoid of chances other than a few long range efforts and a free kick that were way off target.
Step up Ryan Robinson; Lions’ ball playing talisman at No.10. After an UNBELIEVABLE 2 yard pass from Josh Armstrong, Ryan ran through Totterdowns’ midfield with ease, and skipped gracefully over a centre back sandwich to coolly slot home into the bottom right corner (thanks for the advice DAD…. I mean Paul).
Only a few minutes later Lion had their second, when some pinball on the edge of the Totterdown box ricocheted off the other half of Ryan squared (Harris) and bounced kindly into the path of stand-in No.9, Ed Bruce. The defence backed off and Ed produced a wonderful left footed finish across the keeper and into the same corner as the first.
With Lion now in full flow, they had their 3rd. A poor cross from left back Beard somehow found its way to Harris, who laid the ball off to Old Mo who lashed in via a deflection from the edge of the box.
The second half started much the same as the first, with Lion retaining possession excellently. This created space on the left wing, and after a blatant push Lion were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Left back Beard (who has a penchant for some suspect free kicks) curled a fabulous effort into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper stranded.
Unfortunately it was He again that was involved at the other end moments later. Totterdown had slowly grown into the second half, and when a tantalising cross was whipped in from their left, Beard collided with the right winger at pace, giving the referee no choice but to award a spot kick. Absolute stonewaller. Their striker stepped up, smashing a well taken penalty to Goalkeeper Ross’s right hand side.
Lion remained calm, and 10 minutes from time it was again captain Josh Armstrong (with a proper assist this time) who played a well weighted ball through to Ryan, who rounded the keeper and cheekily chipped into an empty net. Game, set and Match.
Jizz had a chance at the end but we probably shouldn’t even bother talking about it.
MOM – Ryan Harris for his two assists and confident display in midfield
Loser – Beard for scoring, whinging, and giving away the most blatant penalty you’re ever likely to see
