In the final evening game of the summer, Lion travelled to Henbury Reserves looking to extend their winning start to the season.
Lion started sharply, retaining possession for long periods and playing some free flowing attacking football. This soon led to the breakthrough, when the ball was held up well by forward Matee Fodor, before playing a defence-splitting pass through to Lion number 10 Ryan Robinson. The onrushing keeper stood his ground, but Ryan held his nerve, waiting until the last moment before delicately chipping the ball into the net for 1-0.
Lion kept up the momentum with some excellent triangle passes through the opposition, whilst Mo Rabia (AKA Old Mo) terrorised the Henbury left back. The pressure quickly resulted in Lion doubling their advantage, when a lengthy passing move led to some great work by Jace Esof on the left wing, squaring across the box for Ryan Robinson to blast in his and Lion’s second mid-way through the half.
Henbury made some changes after the second goal, and started to find a foothold in the game, causing a scare for Lion when the Henbury forward cannoned an effort off the post shortly before half time.
Into the second half, Henbury were managing to take more control of possession. Lion still looked comfortable, resigning the home side to speculative long range efforts. Lion’s advantage was halved however, when a corner was nodded in by Peter Crouch’s gym-going cousin.
The goal spurred Lion on to get back on top, and gaffer Luke Brimble brought on some fresh legs. The game turned into a physical battle, where Lion came out on top, with special mention to Mo (AKA Tall Mo) for shrugging off challenge after challenge and winning the ball back countless times.
This tenacity led to a counter attack, with Tall Mo beating the full back for pace down the left before un-selfishlessly squaring for Jono Lashbrook to score a well-taken first goal for the club to seal the win at 3-1. This took the wind out of Henbury’s sails, and Lion remained on top for the last 10 minutes to make it 3 wins from 3 in their first season in the Bristol & District Senior.
MOM: Ryan Robinson for an absolute Rolls Royce performance
Loser: Matee for sitting on his arse on the sidelines whilst the ref was trying to kick the game off
